American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Caucus (Est. 1981) promotes equal opportunity and access for indigenous peoples of North America and the Hawaiian Islands to health care, provides a supportive entry into APHA and disseminates information about major native health issues and programs. The AI/AN/NH Caucus also works with APHA to promote policy beneficial to Native health needs to assure quality care and equal access.
 
 
AIANNHC GOALS

 

Provide a focal point within the American Public Health Association for persons having particular interest in the theory, practice, or research in American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian health issues.

 

Serve as a mechanism for linking APHA to other organizations having interests in American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian health issues.

 

Strengthen the professional development of interested APHA members through networking and information sharing.

 

Provide a forum for the analysis, interpretation and recommendations of current research that has implications for American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian health.

 

Advocate for quality public health care, policies, and programs in American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian communities and settings.

Provide to APHA and others, professional consultation on American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian health matters.

 

Work with American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other individuals and organizations in the development of standards for professional preparation and practice for American Indians and Alaska Natives.

 

AIANNHC OBJECTIVES

 

Increase the visibility and involvement of American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians in the APHA by augmenting an expanded membership to improve the quality and increase the number of professional research and report presentations concerned with health care to American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian populations.

 

Affect a national policy toward an improved health care system for American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians.

 

Utilize the APHA Professional Placement Service as a resource for qualified labor force recruitment of American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and non-Indian health professionals to American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian health care programs.

 

Involve health care professionals in the planning and implementation of the delivery of health care to American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian tribes and communities.

 

Increase jobs, training and number of American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian health professionals and leaders.

 

MEMBERSHIP

 

There are two types of individual membership within the AIANNHC, official memberships and associate memberships. Official members are individuals who are members of the American Public Health Association (APHA) as well as members of the AIANNHC. Associate members are those individuals who are not members of APHA, but wish to be involved with the AIANNHC.

 

Students may participate as either official student members or as associate student members. Organizations may participate as official or associate members. All official and associate members must complete a membership questionnaire and pay an annual fee to be set by the Caucus for newsletters and other mailings and materials. Membership includes both Natives and non-Natives and the annual fee is due at the beginning of each fiscal year (October 1).
